I shook my head and stood. The minister stepped over to shake my hand. As I turned to leave, a large figure caught my eye as it loomed in the distance.
I saw a flash of black. Hello again. The cheshire-smiled beast hung crooked on the wall. Its eyes flicked back and forth. Its tail swished.
My brain was playing tricks on me. I dared to peek across to the other wall, expecting to find the bulging eyes following me. The wall was empty.
Swish swish. And the clock. Tick-tock. Come back. We’re not finished with you yet…
“Tick-tock,” it seemed to say, smiling its obscene smile. “We were waiting for death to come, but you’ll do instead. Won’t you entertain us?”
