It had been three weeks since someone bombed my home. I had been working closely with the local PD to figure out who the hell would be dumb enough to target me. I was well known for being the Goddess of Wisdom, but what people tended to forget was that I am also the Goddess of War. I can be very kind to those I deeply value. I love humanity, at least most of humanity. However, I have one hell of a temper, and this had royally pissed me off. Whoever did this invaded my privacy, my home, and my peace. There would be hell to pay. I could promise you that.

I was thankful that the repairs did not take long, and I could sleep in my bed again. I’d had everything fixed, my security beefed up sufficiently, and my belongings replaced. Luckily the intruder was unaware of the secret panic room that I had installed when they custom-built my home. It’s safe from water, wind, storm, and apparently, explosives. It’s where I kept my valuables and most personal treasures. They may be meaningless to others, but they meant everything to me. I was told it is impenetrable (aside from a nuclear warhead) and hack-proof. Dinlas was the head of security for the whole GC and damn amazing at his job. He was one of the few that I would truly trust with my safety. So when he said it wouldn’t happen again, I believed him. He even made it so I could control everything from my phone. I’d have to find a way to thank him, but what did you give someone for making sure that you wouldn’t be killed in your sleep? The receptionist I hired said that the only equivalent was sex…and that because he was male that it would be the best way to thank him. She then showed me a whole slew of lingerie that would say thank you appropriately. Although they were very nice, I had to remind her that nothing about the conversation was appropriate and that she needed to get back to work. Mortals do love their frilly sex apparel.

I took in a deep breath and sipped on my single malt whiskey as I sat quietly in front of my fireplace. I could enjoy the peace and quiet again, and it’s positively glorious. Maybe I’d get some sleep and ponder what I should get Dinlas. I drank the last of my drink and walked to the kitchen to rinse the glass. I turned on the water, and my phone started going insane. Not just a ring, but a blaring siren sound. I rushed over to see what the hell was going on. It was the alert sound Dinlas had set for an intruder. I sure hoped it didn’t do that in the middle of the night if a squirrel came onto the property. Ah hell, better be over-informed and cautious, than shot in the face or blown up. I was still thankful for it as I turned off the obnoxious sound and looked at the screen. Someone in a big behemoth of a truck was parked in front of my driveway. I hurried to grab my Desert Eagle. It’s 50 caliber and left one hell of a hole. The intruder may be unrecognizable after, but who the fuck cared? I knew I didn’t.

Silently, I turned off the lights and crept to the door, waiting for the intruder to disembark his or her (I’m not sexist, bad guys and assholes come in all forms) truck. The adrenaline kicked in and I fought the urge to exit my home in a blaze of glory to riddle the vehicle with bullets. I was sure Susie Sassy Pants of the Homeowners Association would just love that. I already had to fight the urge to throat punch her every time she opened her mouth and her high-pitched, obnoxious voice invaded my space. She was like if Nanny Fran and Janice from Friends had a baby. It’s positively unbearable. Between a gunfight and having to hear her mouth, I chose to wait.

It felt like forever before someone got out. He was definitely male, well built, and holding something behind his back. He wore a very nice suit, and I could see that it was tailored to fit by the way it hung on his frame. He wore a fedora hat the same color as his suit that completely obscured his face. That, coupled with the darkness, and I had no idea who was approaching my front door. What the hell was he holding behind him? It’s large…maybe a shotgun? The way he was dressed, I half expected it to be a Tommy-Gun. Could he be one of the Wise-guys sent to make me go swimming with the fishes?

A few more heartbeats passed as he approached my door. He started to pull out whatever he was holding behind him, and I swung open the door violently and aimed the barrel at his chest. He jumped at the abrupt sight of me holding the gun on him.

“Athena, you startled me.” The Captain looked from the gun, to me, and back again. “Ummm… I’m not sure you need the gun for these.” He pulled a huge bouquet from behind his back and presented them to me.. There had to be 4-dozen deep red roses, complete with little puffs of baby’s breath and matching wrapping. They were gorgeous, but I was not sure why he had brought them.

I stared at him and the enormous display of flowers. He cleared his throat to bring my attention back to his face.

“These are for you. It’s getting a little awkward standing here holding them.”

I felt the heat seep into my face as I blushed.

“Yes, of course. I’m sorry, I don’t get unexpected visitors much…or flowers. Would you like to come in?” I took the flowers and smiled before holding the door open to let him inside.

“That’s a shame.”

“What is?” I asked as I went to put the flowers into a vase.

“That you don’t get flowers. I would have thought that you received them all the time.” His smile was dazzling. “I mean being you. Are they too much?” It was his turn to look slightly embarrassed. I guess he realized he was overcompensating with the flowers because he thought I received them all the time. Speaking of overcompensating…

“So, that’s your truck?”

“Yes.”

“It’s a little big, don’t you think?”

He grinned. “You know what they say about men with huge trucks, don’t you?”

I waited for the dick comment, boasting of how large his phallic region is. It seemed to be a thing with the males: beat your chest and wave your dangly bits about.

“They have big tires,” he answered matter-of-factly, and I burst out in laughter. He laughed too, and it broke the awkwardness of the conversation.

“That’s the first time that I have heard you laugh. It’s radiant. I’d like to hear it more often.”

“Thank you,” I said, wiping the tears from my eyes. “I’m just relaxing and having a drink. Would you like one?”

“Yes, that sounds lovely.” He gave me that dazzling smile of his again as I took a glass and poured him four fingers worth.

“Trying to get me drunk so you can take advantage of me?” He laughed before adding, “You don’t have to get me drunk first.” He was still laughing as he winked at me.

“Sorry, I often forget how much of a lightweight you mortals are.” It was my turn to laugh. It was nice spending time with someone who openly knew that I was a goddess and was not intimidated by it. He leaned in close and took the glass. For the barest of moments, I thought he would kiss me. He retrieved the drink from my hand and took a sip.

“Thank you. This is delicious.”

“You’re welcome. Would you like to sit by the fire for a bit and talk? If you don’t have time, I understand.”

“Even if I didn’t have the time, I would make it. Only a fool would turn down an invitation by a Goddess. Especially you. I can’t imagine one more beautiful and smart.”

“You would be surprised if you met my family.”

“Oh, I very much doubt that.” He smiled again, and it made me feel all warm and fuzzy. He was flirting with me. Although I was used to male attention, I was not used to having this reaction to it. I walked over to the large fur in front of the lit fire and sat down. He followed and sat, closer than he needed to, but I wasn’t going to complain. He took another drink of his whiskey and watched me. His eyes rarely left me, as if he was trying to memorize me or was staring at a painting.

“Why do you keep staring at me?”

“Because…” He was just a breath away.

“Because, why?”

Then, without warning, he closed the rest of the distance between us. His free hand was in my hair, cupping the side of my face as he kissed me. He tasted sweet and smelled delicious. Seeing that I wasn’t pulling away, he deepened the kiss. I felt something stir within me, and then all my restraint and composure broke. I wrapped my arms around his shoulders and legs around his waist as he pulled me onto his lap. His arms enveloped me, holding me as close to him as our clothes would allow. Passion took over. He picked me up and laid me onto my back. His weight on top of me felt like he belonged there. He took my mouth again and we ground against each other, his erection pushing violently against the fabric of his dress pants. The huge truck was definitely not compensation for anything. By the way he felt against me, he could drive a moped or a Prius. Our drinks spilled as we rolled around, letting our shared passion take over. Normally, I would care about the fur getting ruined, but right then, I couldn’t manage the effort to give a damn about anything other than the feel of his body against me, the way his muscles felt, hard and strong underneath his clothing, and his mouth pressing against mine. The building tension was overwhelming.

We let it take us over completely until we were both naked and panting on my fur rug. He pulled me onto his chest, and I brought a fur blanket with me. We just laid there, basking in the afterglow until we both fell asleep. We woke up in the middle of the night, and the passion overtook us again. By morning we were lying tangled up and spent in my king-sized bed, both of us well-sated and enjoying each other’s comfort. Eventually, we would have to leave the warmth. Eventually, we would have to go back to reality, back to a world of killers, dead bodies, and crime. However, right then, at that moment, we chose to ignore the world and stay as we were. The rest of the world could wait.
