When It Hits The Fan

“Please,” she whispered, and it was all I needed to hear. After all, consent was the sexiest word in any language. Quickly, I grabbed her arms and spun her so that I had her pinned against the wall with her hands above her head. I parted her legs with my own and started grinding against her in the most intimate places.

“I have wanted to do this ever since we first met,” she said right before her lips claimed mine. Her kiss was hot and demanding. As she deepened it, I could feel the anticipation of the sex to come building within me. Her hands tangled in my long golden hair as she pressed against me, pinning me against the wall with her body. She thrust her tongue into my mouth as her hands slid down to cup my breasts. Her need was like electricity in the air, igniting our bodies.

I could have easily pushed her off me. She was a mortal. It would have been easy to push her away, so why didn’t I? Damn it, why didn’t I stop her? Because I was lonely. I needed the touch of someone that couldn’t get enough of me. I needed to be needed, and she needed me. The familiar pains of loneliness tried to invade my mind but were quickly forgotten. She was a sexy distraction that I would welcome with open… arms.

“I have to have you, Athena. I can’t fight this any longer. I need you,” she whispered into my mouth. Her desire radiated off of her, soaking into my skin and igniting my fire. “Please,” she whispered, and it was all I needed to hear. After all, consent was the sexiest word in any language. Quickly, I grabbed her arms and spun her so that I had her pinned against the wall with her hands above her head. I parted her legs with my own and started grinding against her in the most intimate places.

“I need you to take me as no man ever could,” she pleaded just before my mouth cupped her voluptuous—

Sirens blared obnoxiously as they passed my home, jarring me from the dream I was enjoying. Where the hells was I, and what gods-awful time was it? I closed my eyes and tried to focus as the siren faded into the distance. Oh, right, I had brought the captain home with me last night. Don’t get me wrong, for a mortal he was decent in bed. He was adequate, both physically and in ability, and it was clear he was experienced. It was just… he wasn’t a she. A large part of me needed something that a man could not give. Although a man’s touch satisfied me, I hungered for the delicate caress that only a woman’s hand could give. I craved that feeling, so much so that my brain had resorted to dreaming of Dianna.

It wasn’t that Dianna wasn’t attractive. She was, and she embodied every quality of her namesake. She was curvy and tall, the perfect specimen of human perfection. If she were any other woman, I would have pursued her, but I couldn’t because of who she was. I could not cross that boundary, no matter how much I longed to. She was Alex’s daughter. The Alex that was in love with me, but I never gave him the time to be more than friends. I couldn’t do that to either of them, but damn, I wanted her.

Slowly, I turned to face the captain. He was a very handsome man, but something felt… wrong. Call it women’s intuition, but I thought it was odd that he’d never taken me to his home. The detective in me wanted to find all the pieces of the puzzle. The woman in me just wanted to enjoy his rock-hard body. Every delicious inch begged to be licked… Damn it, Athena, focus. Ugh, I had to get out of this bed. It was distracting me. If I stayed here too much longer, I might distract myself with his body again.

With a quiet sigh, I climbed out of bed. Slipping on a silk robe, I walked barefoot into the kitchen. The lights momentarily blinded me, but my eyes quickly adjusted. After the coffee had started, I decided to go for a run. Johnathan was still fast asleep when I closed the door to my home and took off down the street. Sometimes, the most freeing feeling was that of nothing but your feet hitting the ground. It didn’t take me long to fall into a steady rhythm of heartbeats and footsteps. Just breathe in and out again. Let the world melt away.

When I returned home from my run, Jonathan was gone. The only sound was the whirl of the air conditioner as it struggled to keep up with the heat wave. Gods, why did it feel like Florida when I was in Pennsylvania? Ugh, fuck Florida.

A tiny note on the countertop read, “Had fun. See you soon. -J” Noncommittal and impersonal. The man was damn good at covering his tracks. So much so that the investigator in me needed to understand. Sure, it was not great to creep on a guy you’re seeing, but something just didn’t feel right.

I grabbed a hot cup of coffee and headed to my home office. I couldn’t help but justify it. One tiny look into his home life should reveal that I was paranoid and that good men still existed. I would glance and see that I was wrong. I mean, what could one little look hurt?

Thanks to covid, I did most of my work remotely. With the click of a button, the screen came to life. Looked like it was time to do some research.

An hour later, I found out that he was probably as cautious as I was. He didn’t have a huge social media presence and had nothing about his personal life online. His background checks were clean. He was a little too clean. I did manage to find his home address. Maybe it was time for a little stakeout.

*****

It was the wee hours of the morning, and his house was dark and quiet. I just sat there like a creep, spying on my lover. What was I expecting to find? A knock on my passenger side window made me jump. Quickly, I drew my .45 and aimed it at the intruder. Okay, maybe not an intruder, but damned if she didn’t scare the crap out of me. It was Dianna.

How the hells did she know where I was? Some sort of goddess hoe jack? I smiled at her as she opened the door and got in.

“I brought you coffee. It’s not the pond sludge you usually drink. It’s a Crio Brew made from cocoa beans. I French-pressed it myself. Here, try it.” She handed me a steaming mug and waited for me to sample it. The smell of cocoa filled my lungs. As amazing as it smelled, it tasted even better.

“It looks like I just found my new favorite morning beverage. Thank you.” Thoughts of the dream flooded my mind. I had to shake them off before I did something stupid.

“So, what are we doing here?” she asked as she looked around at the surrounding houses, suburbia at its middle-class finest.

“More importantly, how did you know I was here?” I raised an eyebrow as I asked the question.

“Look, I am your partner, which means things like stakeouts should include me,” she reasoned. I hadn’t known we were official partners, but since we were still planning our revenge on those responsible for Alex’s death, she had a point. So, for now, I was stuck with her, and I was not complaining about it.

“You didn’t answer my question,” I asked again, and she looked down, blushing. Another time it would have been adorable as hells, but I was feeling off about it right now.

“I traced your cell phone. I know it is a misuse of FBI resources, but I was worried when you didn’t call me back. So I hunted you down.”

She didn’t know why, but she knew where. I wondered if she had put the two together. She knew I was sleeping with the captain, but not about last night.

“Honestly, this is extracurricular and not involving a perp. It’s… personal. You don’t have to stay. We are not in any danger.”

“I’ll keep you company if you don’t mind. My dad’s apartment is so lonely at night. “

I nodded and sipped my non-coffee. Just as I was about to give up and go home, lights flicked on in the house. Good, we finally had movement. After what seemed like forever, the living room light turned on. No curtains, bold man. It didn’t take long for him to come into view. From the outside, what I could see was a nice and well-kept house.

After a couple of minutes, a woman in a pink silk bathrobe walked up to Johnathan. She was carrying an infant in her arms. She handed him the baby and kissed him. He disappeared for a moment and then returned with the baby and two more small children following him.

I sat and watched my captain and his family start their day. My heart ached, and I was unsure if I should be mad or heartbroken. The answer was yes to both. I debated what I should do for a moment. I could kill him, but that would harm his family. It was not their fault he was a cheating piece of shit. No, there were other things I could do. However, continuing to sleep with him was not an option.

With a sigh, I started the car. “Do you want me to drive you to your car?”

“Nope, I took an Uber. My car is in the shop. Can you drop me off on the way, please?” I nodded and drove her home. My thoughts raced around in my head, and a deep silence fell over the vehicle. I was afraid if I opened my mouth, I would either say too much or kiss her. Both were bad ideas. Especially since I was hurt by Johnathan’s deceptions. It wouldn’t be fair to Dianna.

The drive to her home was uneventful. Once I put the car into park, she leaned over and kissed my cheek.

“I’ll see you in the morning.” She quickly got out of the car and rushed to her front door. Then it sank in. She just kissed me. Yes, on the cheek, but she had never done that before.

“Damn it, Athena, focus and stop reading into things.”
